I was trying, failing, to find on this image_doctors web page what the email address was where I should send questions. But I guess the comments button 'll do just as well.
FIRST OFF,.. B R A V O.. and thank-you soooo soo much for your amazing, informative, way to cool and it makes me laugh with so much pleasure,.. podcast. I look forward impatiently to every one, and become sad when my iTunes shows up nikonians-'empty' :-(
I have a question that I HOPE YOU MIGHT HAVE TIME to answer someday.. I specifically bought a D200 a few months back because I really liked the idea that I'd be able to stick my old lenses on it (I have an 80-200/4-5.6 that I used to use a lot with my 801s). I figured that what with 'digital' I'd be finding a lot of 2nd-hand lenses dumped on the market.. or else already on the market but studiously ignored by D50 and D70 owners. But now I'm not so sure if using those lenses is as good as, better than, or worse than... buying newer digital lenses.
Example... If I'm faced with the option of buying an 85mm 1.4 AFS versus the same lense AF-D... can you tell me why buying the AFS would be downright silly?
The biggest argument 'in favour' of going AFS for me,.. is my thinking that maybe justmaybe Nikon will go full-frame one day and that way I don't have to replace all the lenses I invest in between now and then. The biggest argument for going AF-D it seems might be newer better construction.. and quieter/faster focusing ??
What other considerations can you two nikon gods come up with that would help me decide whether to go AFS or AF-D ??
yours truly,
Dr.K.
(well.. ok... it's Shawn for you!). :-)

Shawn, I'm sorry we didn't see this earlier. The comments get a bit hidden on this blog. :)
The 85mm 1.4 has only been made in two primary versions: manual focus and AF-D. There's no AF-S version of this lens (yet). I think you may be thinking of DX-format lenses based on your concern regarding formats, but the good news is that all 85mm lenses will cover the entire 35mm format. I wouldn't hesitate to buy an 85mm 1.4 AF-D unless it doesn't fit your budget. If that's a problem, the 85mm 1.8 AF-D is an excellent way to go.
