On Location gone fishin'

gone_fishin.jpgLiterally... Martin has been out fishing these past few days and must regretfully announce that he has concentrated more on scaly creatures than on Nikonians (with good luck he says). Because of this the podcast On Location is cancelled this week, but will be back in full force next Monday.

Hi, Martin!

Not sure this message will reach you, since this is the first time I have attempted to leave a comment on your blog, and the procedures using Type Key sign up are confusing.

I wanted to compliment you on your podcast quality and substance. I look forward to hearing your voice on the On Location broadcasts. Even though I live far away in Fort Worth, Texas, listening to you makes me feel I am right there with you, sharing the photographic experience. You obviously put a lot of time and thought into your presentations, and the music you choose is always terrific. I would love to know some of the selection titles/artists you use.

One question I have is regarding the audio quality of your podcast, which is always exceptional. Reminds me of NPR (National Public Radio) live spots that we receive here in the states. Can I ask what portable recorder you use, and what kind of mike arrangement. I just purchased a $100 Olympus DS-30 but cannot seem to eliminate extensive background noise, wind noise as well as the friction of touching the unit or the mic. On the other hand, your broadcast is crystal clear.

Thanks for any info you can give me, and I look forward to your future broadcasts.

By the way - Hope you caught some big fish!

Regards -

Rick,

Thanks for your comment. It did get through. No problem there.

I'm really glad you like the podcasts. I have a great time recording and producing them. As I have said many times before: they force me to go shooting and force me to think enough about what I am doing to be able to explain it to others.

My recording setup is simple: I use a Samson Zoom H2 hand held digital recorder. I change between using the built in microphones and a couple of small external Giant Squid microphones that I clip onto the collar of my jacket. The latter have the advantage of leaving both my hands free when I shoot. The built-in microphones have a slightly better sound.
I fight the wind like you do, but foam covers for the microphones help a lot. And like you I have to be careful when recording with the built-in microphones. Excessive handling will wind up as noise on the recording. The H2 has a screw-in handle, which partly eliminates this problem.

Several people have asked me questions about my setup, and I will most likely write a blog entry about my sound and slideshow gear, software and workflow.

Hope this helps you

Martin
