Caution notice regarding "free" NikoniansPress books

Book-DNL_85.jpgIt has come to our attention that certain books in the NikoniansPress/Rocky Nook Mastering the Nikon DSLR series are being offered for free download on the World Wide Web. A host of books regarding photography and certain camera types are also being offered for free (from various authors and publication houses).

We were notified of the “free” offer extending to Nikonian Darrell Young’s (Digital Darrell) Mastering the Nikon D90 book by Darrell himself.

He has blogged on the topic, reciting his adventures in the world of malware. He reports: “When I opened the file, my virus scanner went wild.” The free offer turned out to be a variant of a common method for spreading malware using Bitstream "torrent" technology. The end result for some unsuspecting bargain hunters with security vulnerabilities could be the equivalent of sharing your private information, passwords and banking details on the Internet.

Darrell's account of his risky adventure in testing the free offer is available here.

For the record, all books thus far published and currently in joint production by NikoniansPress and Rocky Nook are not currently “downloadable” for free.
