Nikon Launches Patent Lawsuit against Sigma

In a brief statement on Wednesday, Nikon filed a lawsuit against Sigma Corporation, maker of third-party lenses, over infringements regarding "interchangeable lenses with vibration reduction for single-reflex cameras." Per industry reports, the suit is worth approximately USD154 million.

Editorial Comments: This could be the beginning of the end for the various "gentlemen's agreements" that have characterized Japanese manufacturing for decades. Any infighting between makers about infringements and technology sharing are traditionally settled internally and privately. This could also mean the price of Sigma lenses with Optical Stabilization may become more volatile until the lawsuit and terms are settled.

Nikonians Academy Europe expands its workshop lineup

Nikonians-Academy-EU_100.jpgFollowing a start-up period of just over six months, Nikonians Academy Europe is pleased to announce a further expansion in the range of workshops on offer to Nikonians.

These new ventures seek to introduce themes and subjects beyond the typical one-day "Master your DSLR" series. Furthermore, several of the workshops like the Steam Train Extravaganza will no doubt be of interest beyond the usual national audiences and tempt visitors to combine an overseas trip with an exciting photographic adventure! Many of these new workshops are scheduled across weekends and comprise daytime activities with evening seminars and social gatherings. The London Street Photography Experience for example is scheduled to coincide with a festival on this subject in the nation's capital - giving you the opportunity to explore beyond the confines of the organised workshop. Competitively priced, these location-based (as opposed to classroom-based) events are hosted by our professional Instructors in conjunction with local experts (where applicable) and offer a unique way of expanding your technical knowledge whilst broadening your photographic horizons! To see the full details of all the (new) workshops visit the Nikonians Academy Europe website.

Severn Valley Railway Steam Train Extravaganza (extended weekend)

In the historic river port of Bridgnorth in the Midlands region of the UK, the Severn Valley Railway (SVR) has kept alive the magnificent world of steam locomotives, running engines and passenger carriages up and down a 16-mile enclosed line through the beautiful Shropshire and Worcestershire countryside. On two very special weekends each year they host a 1940’s themed event, inviting people to become fully immersed in one of the most significant and yet romantic periods in history when steam trains where at the heart of the British transport system. To complete the picture, the stations, their staff and visiting public along the line are bedecked in 1940’s costume and livery and a whole range of activities are staged for people to take part in; from a mock wedding and wartime aircraft fly-pass to a foot-tapping Big Band Ban dshow.

Together with instructor and regional manager UK & Ireland, John McDonald you have the chance to participate in this spectacle of visual delight and to soak up some of that 1940's atmosphere.
Dates: July 1 to July 4, (Friday through Monday) 2011

London Street Photography Experience (weekend)

Some of Photography's most famous protagonists are inextricably linked with the practice of capturing candid moments, fleeting gestures, bizarre coincidences and visual obscurities found out there on the streets, avenues and byways of our towns and cities. Many of photography's most iconic images depict "decisive moments" where the power of the stills' camera to freeze a unique slice of time is portrayed to magnificent effect. These pictures delight and enthral us on many levels; they speak to us of the human condition, the society we live in and the transient nature of life itself. But almost above all else they allow us to be there - to participate - to be a witness to the fact that it did, for that split second at least, exist.

Timed to coincide with the first ever "London Street Photography Festival", this workshop is the perfect way to celebrate an approach to using a camera that is arguably at the very core of the art of Photography itself. Nikonians Academy Europe has put together an agenda of presentations, group review meetings and a series of accompanied "street walk" sessions in a number of key locations and at very specific times in and around the centre of London. From our workshop base at the Novotel London West in Hammersmith, we will ride the Tube around London, coming together as a group in the evenings to discuss the images we have made and to exchange our experiences. To kick things off, there will be a presentation on Street Photography by John McDonald on Friday 15th, in which he will illustrate the appro ach of the major historic and contemporary photographers in this genre and illustrate and discuss some of the equipment and techniques you may use during the workshop. John will lead the group through all five street walk sessions and be on hand to provide support and feedback throughout the two days of image capture.
Dates: July 15 through 17 (Friday through Sunday) 2011.

Artistic Nude Photography (5 Days)

With Pascal's guidance, expert tips and a team of stunning models (at least three different models a day) you will be able to realise beautiful and creative images.

This special version of Pascal's workshop includes the services of our Head Instructor, Hayo Baan, who will provide advanced technical support throughout the five days.
