Nikonians stands by its members in these difficult economic times

be-nikonian_100.jpgNikonians.org has decided to further enhance its membership policy making it possible for members to extend the free Basic membership term from the current limited one to an indefinite period of time.
To keep the free Basic membership active, all a member needs to do is to stay active by posting in the forums, uploading images at the Galleries and adding friends to his or her profile.

This new, enhanced Basic membership will be provided starting October 1st, 2011
In other words, those members who cannot afford to be Silver, Gold or Platinum can remain members for free, indefinitely, in exchange for interactive activity. New members who can afford it are encouraged to upgrade to Silver or a higher level as soon as they are convinced of the value of the Nikonians community experience (forums, workshops, podcasts, eZine, pro shop, galleries, contests, membership rewards and more).

Membership-Shields_300.jpgSilver, Gold and Platinum members will be further rewarded for their support. Nikonians is adding features which will be for free to them, for example, an app to download and read The Nikonian eZine and the Resources articles on an iPad and possibly other devices later, and a Premium Content Section with the most recent and interesting articles. It is planned to provide this new articles section to paying members before year-end.

In addition to the above, Nikonians is preparing a Showcase Gallery with the best images posted in the forums in a given period and to provide a recognition insignia added to the Silver, Gold and Platinum membership postings, also available before the year ends.
The Nikonians community is also facing the economic challenges by launching the Joy of Photography Program, bringing camera equipment to mid-school kids who cannot afford it, with the help of our membership.

Here's how it works:

At the Basic membership level, a member can collect days for as long as wanted. There is no limit to the days earned using the activity reward system.

The activity reward system works as follows:
A post in any forum adds 4 calendar days to the initial 25 free days term
Uploading of images to the Galleries, addition of friends to the profile, making an introduction at the New Members forum and other activities will also all add days, as will be communicated in the welcoming email.

Silver, Gold and Platinum members do not need to collect days. Their financial contribution will be further rewarded with added features/services.
If a paying membership is lost, because it is not renewed in due time, it is set to Basic with a valid period of an additional 25 days to give the member more time to renew, taking into account trips, holidays and the like.

Once a Basic membership is lost because of deactivation, it must be reactivated to at least Silver or create a new free Basic account.

Nikonians Academy enters fall with gusto

Nikonians-Academy-News-Bog.jpgMike Hagen, Director of the Nikonians Academy, has been fine-tuning the schedule for the coming months and he takes time to fill us in on the most activities and plans for the Academy workshop leaders:

September is coming to a close and the Nikonians Academy staff had a great month of travels with workshops from New York to Arizona. One of our fun workshops was to Monument Valley and Page, Arizona where our participants photographed beautiful slot canyons and stunning landscapes. October is right around the corner and we have a number of exciting outdoor photography adventures in store.

Balloon_250.jpgOne of them will be to the visually stunning Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta from October 3rd - 7th.

The other is our Wildlife Adventure in Grand Teton NP, 10/3 - 10/6. Both of these trips are sold out, but we are always adding more (see below).

Be sure to watch our galleries for images from the participants!

Steve Simon has been running his fantastic Passionate Photographer workshops for us all around the USA and Canada.

Pass_284.jpgLast week he had a wonderful interview with TWiT Photo to discuss his new book, The Passionate Photographer.

Check out this link to get to know Steve better.

Steve is running his next series of workshops in Philadelphia, PA from 10/13 - 10/16.

After Philly, Steve heads to Washington, DC from 10/20 - 10/23.

David Tejada's famous Lighting-location_275.jpg Professional Lighting on Location workshops are slated to begin in Los Angeles, CA on 10/15 and San Francisco, CA on 10/22.

These two-day workshops teach everything you need to know for creating amazing flash photos at just about any location.

Whether your need is to capture a professional portrait in the field or photograph your kid's birthday party, this workshop will demonstrate the most current methods for creating beautiful images.

Bison_145.jpgFor you wildlife photographers, we've just added four brand new 2012 workshops to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks.

These trips are scheduled for Spring and Fall to coincide with wildlife babies and the Fall rut.

Jim Stamates has scheduled the Grand Teton Wildlife Adventure back to back with the Yellowstone Wildlife Adventure so participants can experience both parks.

In fact, if you sign up for both the back-to-back trips, then we will refund $100 as an overall discount. Check 'em out here and here.

Jim has also has put together an amazing wildlife photography trip called whales_250.jpgAlaska - Whales, Bears, and Ice Fields.

The trip is based out of Juneau and includes three boat cruises, a trip to photograph bears, whale watching excursions, a sightseeing flight over ice fields and much more.

This promises to be an incredible journey.

D3x_225.jpgWinston Hall is finishing up his workshops in Indianapolis, IN this weekend and is next headed to Denver, CO from 10/27-10/30.

He'll be leading workshops in Master the Nikon D700/D3/D3s/D3x, Master Nikon D7000/D90/D80, Master Nikon iTTL CLS Wireless Flash and Master Nikon Capture NX2.

Michael Mariant's November 17-20 Death Valley workshop is one of our most popular annual trips. Death Valley is widely regarded as one of the best locations in the USA for stunning landscape photography. Capture the vibrancy of this austere desert during shooting sessions and specialized instruction in landscape photography. Michael is a master trip leader and has been photographing Death Valley for years.

Africa-Hagen.jpgWe continue to increase our international travel destinations with trips to Africa and the Galapagos.

Our November 2011 Tanzania trip is sold out, but we are headed back in November 2012.

Also, our Galapagos photo adventure in September 2012 is very close to selling out with just a few seats remaining.

Acadia_145.jpgIf you've always wanted to photograph Acadia NP, then why don't you come along with us? Our newest instructor Les Picker is leading a 4-day photo adventure to Acadia NP from 10/18 - 10/22, 2012. Yes, this is a year away, but it is never too early to begin planning for next year.

Nikon announces new system beginning with two models

J-1_95.jpgIt’s been more than 60 years since a Nikon Camera first carried the designation “1” and now we have two more. Nikon announced on September 21 the first in a series of cameras featuring the new 1 NIKKOR lens system.

According to the Nikon USA Press release: “The Nikon J1 and V1 will be available throughout the United States beginning October 20th. The Nikon J1 camera with 10-30mm lens kit will be available at a suggested retail price of $649.95 (USD). The Nikon V1 camera with 10-30mm lens kit will be available for a suggested retail price of $899.95.”

Want to know More?
Vi-Ji_lns_325.jpgA profusely illustrated Nikon 1 brochure is available for free download.

Sample images from the Nikon V1 and Nikon J1 are also available
.
The accessories lineup includes a GPS unit, Speedlight and Nikon F-mount adapter specifically designed for the Nikon 1 system.

For preorder opportunities please check our Berger Bros Camera Forum. Brad and Lisa will be posting all information for preorders on newly announced Nikon cameras, lenses and accessories as soon as possible.

For a detailed look at the two new Nikon 1 system cameras and their accessories, take a look at Darrell Young's (DigitalDarrell) Café discussion. Once you have read his take on the news, tell us what you think in the open discussion thread.

Is this the long anticipated "big release" that has been marked by the big yellow and black countdown pointing to an early afternoon Eastern Standard USA time?
We have some members who are suspecting that announcement may be related to a new DSLR. Only time will tell.
