Getting out in Wolfville in November I met Allen Myers who was in town for the Devour Film Festival in Wolfville. Allen's film Col Di Rocca was shown, made in Vendemmai Italia. Allen was hanging up his outdoor exhibit which immediately caught my attention! Allen Myers is a unique and talented photographer, film maker, writer and humanitarian. On January 15th, 2006, he made a life changing decision to change something in the world. With a backpack of clothes, a camera and a journal he headed to Turino Italy which was the first of many destinations.
The artistry and vision of his work takes shape as he weaves himself into the communities in which he discovers. He works with, lives with and feels with the peoples he later captures on film and in stories. Nomadsight is a temporary street art instalment of world photography, it moves from city to city and in the manner grows in its collection. Nomasight.com is a photography travel blog about Allen's global adventures.
Supported by the loving people of the earth, these photographs tell the stories.

Welcome to Nikonian- Northern Exposure, with renowned photographer Peter Spence. Peter finds his inspiration, not by other photographers, but from the old masters of the Renaissance and Impressionist period. These old techniques will inspire your photography to a new level of awareness that you never experienced before. Peter will show how the world famous Henri Cartier Bresson applied his painting skills to create his incredible journey into photography.
From studying the art work of Van Gogh, painting on the left, Peter learned to look for the uncommon pictures that he took on the right above. If Peter did not study the historical paintings he would have not been inspired in his photography today. Therefore, this technique (of combining painting and photography which Henri Cartier Bresson was favous for ) has taken Peter to new levels in improving his photography in different ways of inspiration.

Welcome to Peter Spence, host of our newest podcast series Nikonians Northern Exposure. Peter hails from Canada (which gives us a clue to the origin of the podcast series name).
His first podcast is now available for free download in the MP3 format, running just short of 30 minutes.
The first topic covers techniques for improving your image sharpness.
Peter draws on his experience as a workshop leader and a self-confessed “Photo Dad” now teaching his daughter how to take photos. He finds that the best way to teach is to ask his students what they are missing in their photography. Once he learns what the student is seeking to improve, he quickly goes into the “basics” mode.
He likes to urge his students to “take the next step” by turning off the full-auto program features on their cameras.
Regardless of your experience level, Peter’s relaxed style in describing the basics is sure to help improve your photography. Give it a listen today.
At some point in our life, all of us Professional Photographers need to go back to the basic of Photography, sometime we do become too comfortable in our Photography, so we do stop learning .So we need to become uncomfortable and approach the basic of Photography in a different light. Why we should to using prime lens more for better sharpness and composition, instead of just using a Zoom lens for every type of images. Why every photographer from beginners to professional, should be carrying a point-to -shoot Nikon camera with them all the time. Learn to see by listening with your ears and the important of using a tripod.
* Learning about the importance and methods of creating sharper images
* Sharing thoughts with Professional and Portrait Photographer Michael Price
* Being Inspired by the words of Robert Capa

The On Location podcast will unfortunately not be out this week. Work and other issues have kept Martin on the heels with regards to photography the past week, and as much as he would love to shoot and record, there simply hasn't been time in the itinerary.
On Location will be back in full force next week. Until then you may enjoy some archived episodes, reading Martin's blog or spend some time cooking up ideas for Martin to cover in the coming episodes. Mail them to him at onlocation@nikonians.org or post them in the Podcast feedback forum.
Martin has tried many of the more workflow-centric photo-editing programs, but always winds up doing most of his image work in good old Photoshop. This episode covers a few of his fairly primitive approaches to editing.

The Nikonians On Location #41 - Pragmatic Printing
Seeing your images on print can be very rewarding, and even though many photographers never make prints any more, others say that it ain't a real picture until it's printed.
On Location's Martin Joergensen falls somewhere in the category "Is OK with images on a screen, but loves a great print". This week he takes his HP B8850 pigment based A3/13x19" printer through the paces and introduces you to his way of printing - unsophisticated but with great results.
Martin Joergensen is on location at his computer as well as walking the dog in a nearby park, and talks a bit about image storage problems and how to dig out pictures from the archives.
He also mentions the fact that he brings his camera almost everywhere and that he gets some decent shots from those random non-shooting trips.
Video supplement:
During his going though old archives, On Location's Martin Joergensen dug out a bunch of old pictures shot on occasions where he wasn't really out shooting. Click here to view Nikonians On Location Video Supplement #40 (NPC-OLV-2008-11-04; 8:57; flash format)

Nine photographers and six models got together in a small theater, and On Location's host Martin Joergensen was there to shoot models and try new stuff with flashes.
Martin Joergensen has caught autumn in several ways: outdoors in the withering forest, indoors in the form of leaves on a white background... and in the shape of a cold. So this time he will lead you through a sniffing and nose dripping fall episode of On Location.
The episode both covers shooting fall outdoors in your local neighborhood as well as shooting indoors in a makeshift studio, where the aim is to get autumn leaves isolated on a white background.

On Locatin's Martin Joergensen had the chance to shoot windsurfers at a championship in Denmark. The day was a bit dull, but good images were caught anyway - and a few lessons on high speed sailing were learned.
One thing not mentioned in the podcast or slide show is: be prepared for saltwater! When the wind is good for surfing, you have waves and spray coming over you constantly, and your gear will get wet. That's the price you pay for getting close to the action.

Nikonian Martin Joergensen packing and getting ready and then shooting a place that he had visited many times before - but never with a camera. It wasn't quite as he remembered.
Alleys can provide some really nice subjects - long rows of trees on both sides of a road. But this row wasn't quite as long as it should have been and the traffic was terrible, so getting the calm to shoot it wasn't easy.

Martin Joergensen went on location shooting fast paced race cars at the Copenhagen Historical Grand Prix. Fun with a Nikon D3 and a 300mm f2.8 as well as a couple of D200's with assorted lenses - 24mm, 10-20mm, 17-55mm, 70-200mm - and SB800's on top to soften the sunlight.
He mingled with the press photographers and shot the celebreties as well as the not so well known, but most of the time he shot cars passing by at high speeds.

Martin Joergensen giving himself the assignment of taking pictures with a distinct line going horzontally through the center. Shot some for the purpose, but also manipulated some in Photoshop.
If you're in some kind of creative doldrum, you can always give yourself an assignment. Martin likes giving himself constraints in his photography - like this one: shoot images, which are cut in half by a horizontal line in the subject.

This time Martin is sticking a lot of individual images together to form collages. He covers the way of shooting them and how to create controlled chaos in the result.
Inspired by Heather Champ of flickr and David Hockney, a British pop artist, we this time venture into a more arty way of taking and working on pictures. By shooting panoramic-like, but without the meticulous control that's used in normal panoramas, we get a dozen or so images that can be arranged into a chaotic collage.

Go behind the lens with photographer Arnold Crane in this informative interview. Mr. Crane is one of the last living links to some of the greatest master photographers of the 20th Century, including Ansel Adams, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and Man Ray.
Click here to download Nikonians Podcast #7 (NPC-2006-08-14.mp3; 41;23; 19MB, MP3 format).
Arnold Crane has been a photographer for the last 62 years, although he started out as a trial lawyer. Arnold's passion for photography has taken him to all corners of the globe. He is a member of the White House Press Photographers Association, and he is well known for his black and white female nudes. Arnold's most important contribution to photography, however, began after a chance meeting with Edward Steichen, curator of photography at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, in the late 1960's. Steichen, after seeing some of Arnold's candid shots of Man Ray, suggested that he photograph "all the photographers". And so, a project thirty years in the making was born.
Arnold's book, On the Other Side of the Camera, was published in 1995 and captured the master photographers at work. The cover photo of Man Ray is one of the true classics of our time! Our roving Nikonian, Jason Odell, caught up with Arnold Crane recently at his home in Chicago, IL, where they sat down for an informal interview.

In this podcast, we talk about our four-day shoot in South Texas, USA. We had a great experiencing shooting from specially-designed photo blinds on private lands as guests of Lens and Land, a consortium of landowners who are opening up their property to photographers in an effort to promote conservation of the Rio Grande Valley region.
Crested caracara at Dos Venadas Ranch, by Jason Odell
We flew to McAllen, Texas for several days of shooting on private ranches as guests of John and Audrey Martin. In an effort to promote conservation, a group called Images for Conservation (ICF) has been formed. Private landowners are encouraged to create photo opportunities on their properties and invite photographers to spend time at their property. The benefits are two-fold: landowners generate a revenue stream by maintaining native habitat, and photographers are rewarded with a shooting experience that just isn't possible in public areas.
In this episode, sponsored by GAF slide film, Rick and Jason discuss two of the newest Nikon products: The F2 and the Nikkormat EL. Is the F2 a worthy successor to the F? Has the Nikkormat EL "lowered the bar" with its automatic exposure mode? Listen to this vintage broadcast originally aired on April 1, 1973 on AM 870 KNKN Radio.
